Being an informed patient

Being informed in Pharmacy

Being as informed as you can be about your health and the medications you take is really important.

Here are some tips to help you become a well-informed person about medicines and health:

    • Write down your medical history by doing things like making a list of the medicines you take, as well as information about vaccinations, and allergies, and share this with any healthcare professional you visit to help them provide the most appropriate treatment for you.
    • Consider booking a medication review with your local pharmacy. This can answer any question you have about your medicines and provides you with a complete list of everything you take.
    • Think about including important information from your family's medical history. Do you have any close relatives who have or had cancer, heart disease, diabetes? It is important to let your doctor know.
    • It’s really important to inform your doctor if you have any allergies to medications, if you are pregnant, have plans to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding.
    • It’s your health and it’s ok to ask about possible side effects for your medicines. You should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you think you may have a negative reaction to any of your medicines.
